For me it’s never really been about black or white, but it’s more about capturing that moment. But being a black photographer I sometimes wonder if race does matter. This picture was taken last week, during my travels around the city. When I encountered a white woman dressed in head-to-toe Chanel on the subway, I immediately wanted to get a snapshot but she quickly turned her head, followed by a complete turn of her body in disapproval of me photographing her. If I am being honest, this has happened before and probably happens to photographers no matter their race. But I can’t help but think how different this situation might have been, had the woman in Chanel been open minded. And because of this, I do think twice, but I also am even more committed to my passion as a form of art and lifestyle.
